Review: HALLOWEEN is Like The TERMINATOR 2 of Horror Movies

The Halloween franchise has made a big and exciting comeback with a new sequel from director David Gordon Green and writer Danny McBride. John Carpenter was also a creative consultant on the film who also provided the wonderfully creepy musical score. Carpenter has said several times that he’s really happy with how the new Halloween film turned out and has said that it will scare the shit out of audiences.

So does the film live up to the expectations that have been set? Hell yeah, it does! All of those reviews that you’ve read praising the film were right on the money. As a long time fan of the Halloween franchise, I loved it! It’s easily the best sequel that has been made in the franchise.

Is the film better than the original film? Of course not! That’s a silly question. The original is a horror masterpiece, but the sequel definitely gives the franchise a fresh new relaunch that awesomely captures the spirit of the original film.

Even the complete overall style of the film is reminiscent of the original. The cinematography, the script, the way the shots were set up, and obviously the musical score. It’s almost as if Carpenter was the brains behind the movie. It certainly felt like a John Carpenter film and I really appreciated that.

Like you’d expect from a Halloween movie, there are plenty of thrills and chills. There are some great scary moments in the film that I’m sure will terrify audiences. Since I’m more desensitized to these kinds of films, I don’t really scare that easy. I just found the horror aspects of the movie more fun than scary. But, if you do scare easy, there are plenty of scenes that will make you jump out of your seats.

The movie also features some well-placed humor and there are also wonderful callbacks to the original film and some of the other sequels. Some of which we’ve already pointed out over the past months. I won’t get into the details of that kind of stuff here because I want to preserve the cinematic experience for you.

I will say there is one scene near the end of the film that fans of the original film are going to flip over. They audience I saw the film with had such a great reaction to it and it’s just one of those scenes that made the movie so great. Don’t worry, you’ll know it when you see it.

It really was awesome seeing Michael Myers and Laurie Strode face off again and their big moment in the the story does not disappoint! Jamie Lee Curtis was in top form in this movie! She had the same kind of badassery that Linda Hamilton had in Terminator 2. In fact, the basic plot of Halloween is very similar to the plot of Terminator 2!

Both films center around a strong woman who survived a crazy experience in their past of being hunted down by a killer and then they spend years preparing for the killer’s return so they could defeat it. All the while everyone thinks they’re crazy. Then killer returns and chaos ensures and the women kick ass.

As much as a liked the film, there was one aspect of it that I could have done without. I can’t really get into without spoiling anything, but I will say that it involves the psychiatrist character who takes over the care of Myers from Dr. Loomis. This character had a strange story arc that I didn’t care for. I get what they were trying to do, but it just fell flat for me.

Halloween is a direct sequel to the first film and it’s set forty years after the events of the first film. It also stars Judy Greer as Karen Strode, the daughter of Laurie, and Andi Matichak (Orange Is the New Black, Underground) plays Allyson, the granddaughter. Then there’s Will Patton and Nick Castle. Everyone delivered wonderful performances.

If you’re a fan of the Halloween franchise or a horror fan in general, then you’re most likely going to have a blast watching the movie.

Marvel Comics Sets Shuri Up To Be The New Black Panther, Could We See This Happen in The MCU Films?

For those of you who don’t know, Marvel Comics has given the Black Panther character Shuri her own ongoing series. The first issue of Shuri has been released and it’s leading to a big change with Black Panther.

The comic is setting her up to take on the mantle of Black Panther because with the absence of T’Challa, the women of Wakanda believe the country needs a Black Panther to show that they are strong.

In the story, Shuri is called to a traditional secret of meeting of Wakanda women called the Elephant's Trunk. With Wakanda in trouble, Shuri's mother Queen Ramonda felt she needed to gather together the group again because T'Challa has been missing for a couple weeks.

Despite the fact that he isn't the ruler of Wakanda anymore because Wakanda is a constitutional monarchy now, they still need a Black Panther to represent and protect them.

The country doesn’t know that T’Challa has been missing and the group is debating whether or not to tell the people of Wakanda about it. They eventually decide to keep that info to themselves and that they need to appear strong, and so Shuri is asked to become Black Panther:

“The people call you Princess Shuri. The ancestors call you Ancient Future. I call you my daughter. But for a time you were called something else, and we need you to take up that name once again. Shuri, for the sake of Wakanda, will you step up and be the Black Panther?”

She doesn’t give an answer. We’ll have to wait for issue #2, but it’s not hard to imagine that she’ll say yes and take on the mantel. They are obviously setting her up for the new Black Panther.

The question is, will this storyline end up finding its way into the MCU? The fans loved Shuri in the first Black Panther movie and it’s very possible that somewhere down the line, Shuri could become Black Panther. After all, Marvel is really pushing lead female characters as they move into Phase 4, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

If Shuri does become Black Panther do you think we’ll see a version of this storyline introduced to the MCU?

Here are the details for Shuri #1:

Shuri #1 is written by Nnedi Okorafor and drawn by Leonardo Romero with a cover by Samuel Spratt, and you can find the official description for the book below.

"FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE BLACK PANTHER! The world fell in love with her in the movie. Now, the Black Panther’s techno-genius sister launches her own adventures — written by best-selling Afrofuturist author Nnedi Okorafor and drawn by Eisner-nominated artist Leonardo Romero! The Black Panther has disappeared, lost on a mission in space. And in his absence, everyone’s looking at the next in line for the throne. But Shuri is happiest in a lab, surrounded by gadgets of her own creation. She’d rather be testing gauntlets than throwing them. But a nation without a leader is a vulnerable one — and Shuri may have to choose between Wakanda’s welfare and her own."

Shuri #1 is in comic stores now.

The Working Title For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Has Us Excited But Production Has Been Delayed Until 2021

The working title for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been revealed via Production Weekly, and we’re pretty excited. Granted, working titles don’t always have anything to do with the subject matter of the film, but if GOTG 3 does then we could be getting a superhero holiday movie! Guardians of The Galaxy 3 is currently working under the title “Hot Christmas”.

I’m really trying not to get my hopes up because I know I’ll just be crushed when the title is actually released, but if Marvel is making a superhero Christmas film that’s super exciting! I’m currently envisioning watching it every holiday season going forward and then subtly using it as an excuse to sneak in a viewing of every other Marvel film.

Unfortunately, the report also says that the movie won’t commence production until February 2021, which means the movie may not hit theaters until late 2022 at the earliest.

Marvel still has yet to find a director to replace James Gunn, who was fired by Disney a few months ago. But, they still are planning to use the script that he wrote.

Someone bring me back down to earth here so I’m not too devastated. The world is too awful to give us something as awesome as a GOTG Christmas movie right?

DC’s “Elseworlds” Crossover Event is Shooting at a Familiar SMALLVILLE Location

A bit of very cool news has surfaced regarding one of the locations that is being used in The CW’s DC “Elseworlds” Arrowverse crossover and it’s sure to excite Smallville fans.

The home that is being used for the Kent family in "Elseworlds" is the same farmhouse house where Clark, Jonathan, and Martha lived on Smallville! The fans at KryptonSite spotted the iconic house in Melissa Benoist's Instagram feed.

Not only is it great to see the same house from Smallville being used in crossover, but it’s also exciting to learn that Green Arrow and The Flash will also head to Superman’s home town as Grant Gustin and Steven Amell have been spotted on the set along with Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch and Benoist

While plot details for the upcoming crossover event remain under wraps, we know that the crossover event will bring Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl to Gotham City where they will meet an Arkham Asylum scientist and Nora Fries, the wife of Batman villain Mr. Freeze. It will also introduce both Batwoman (Ruby Rose) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) to the DC TV multiverse. And it marks the first time Arrow and The Flash meet Superman, who will be sporting a black suit.

"Elseworlds" will take place across three nights, and will launch on Sunday, December 9th on The Flash at 8pm. It continues on Arrow Monday, December 10th at 8pm and then finishes up on Supergirl Tuesday, December 11th at 8pm.

SESAME STREET Puppeteer Caroll Spinney is Retiring After 50 Years

Caroll Spinney has been the puppeteer for Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for 50 years on Sesame Street. He was the original puppeteer for both characters and is now retiring at the ripe old age of 84.

The announcement came from Sesame Workshop’s Twitter and Spinney will be succeeded by Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson. Vogel currently works on Count Von Count and will now also do the role of Big Bird. Meanwhile, Jacobson will add Oscar the Grouch to his other puppets including Grover, Bert, and Guy Smiley. Spinney’s final season will be the upcoming 50th season that will debut on HBO in 2019.

Co-founder of Sesame Workshop, Joan Ganz Cooney, made the following statement along with the announcement:

“Caroll has been one of the leading lights of ‘Sesame Street’ from the very beginning. His genius and his talent made Big Bird the most beloved yellow feathered friend across the globe. But the sheer artistry of Caroll is that he also brought Oscar to life and made him the most lovable Grouch in the world.”

It’s sad to see Spinney go after all these years, but he’s earned his retirement.

Enjoy The Badass RED DEAD REDEMPTION II Launch Trailer

Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite video games. I love that it’s an open-world western that you can play around in. As a fan of the western genre in general, this game is everything I would ever want in a western video game! So, of course I’m excited about Red Dead Redemption II!

I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from the sequel so far and with the release of the game coming later this month, Rockstar Games has released a badass new launch trailer.

The game will tell the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang "as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive."

Red Dead Redemption 2 is described as "an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland." It's also been revealed that the game’s "vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand-new online multiplayer experience."

I don’t have a lot of time to play video games these days. I’ve currently been making my way through the new Spider-Man game, and you can bet your ass I’ll be playing Red Dead Redemption II!

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26th.

Season 2 of THE TERROR Confirmed To Be Set During World War II

I thought the first season of the Ridley Scott-produced AMC series The Terror was incredible! I love those kinds of supernatural stories and I’ve been looking forward to seeing what Season 2 will entail. The first season was inspired by the true story of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition to the Arctic in the 1800s.

Deadline has confirmed that The Terror Season 2 will be set during World War II in a Japanese-American internment camp. The story is said to “center on an uncanny specter that menaces a Japanese-American community from its home in Southern California to the internment camps to the war in the Pacific.”

We never really see any stories set in the Japanese-American internment camps and it’s sure to make for a fascinating story. I’m looking forward to seeing exactly how this story will play out.

It was also announced that Narcos director Josef Kubota Wladyka would be directing the first episode of Season 2 of AMC’s anthology series. Series co-creator Alexander Woo (True Blood) and Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island) had this to say in a statement about hiring the director:

“We are so thrilled to have gotten our dream director in Josef Kubota Wladyka. Not only is he a proven talent in both features and television, but his Japanese-American background gives him a personal connection to the material as well.”

The Terror Season 2 will consist of 10-episode and it’s expected to air on AMC in 2019. What do you think of the setting of the next season?

Check Out Rishi’s Analysis Of His Legendary Set With Zain At The Big House 8

The Big House 8 was an exciting Super Smash Bros. Melee event from beginning to end. Though the tournament’s Sunday Top 8 featured gripping matches, such as Joseph “Mang0” Marquez and William “Leffen” Hjelte’s back-and-forth winner’s semi-finals showdown, arguably its most entertaining set occurred during Saturday’s Top 64 bracket: the five-game Marth ditto between Zain “Zain” Naghmi and Rishi “Rishi” Malhotra.

Entering the set, there were many apparent similarities between the two competitors. They began their Melee careers in the same region, Maryland/Virginia; they both main Marth; both have experienced noteable come-ups this year, with Zain winning Shine 2018 and Rishi defeating Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman at Evolution Championship Series 2018; and their playstyles are similar, both featuring shades of new-age Marth technology that sets them apart from old-school Marth players such as Mew2King.

The set delivered on the hype. As commentator Kashan “Chillin” Khan noted, the two were extremely familiar with each others’ play, making each game into a cerebral battle of wits decided by a few crucial moments and reads. Each game went down to the wire, with the fourth ending in a stunning reversal by Zain that prevented him from losing the set 3-1. But as entertaining as it was, much of the true drama remained locked inside the heads of the competitors.

Until now. Aside from his impressive resume as a player, Rishi is also an avid content creator; he has his own podcast, Analog, which he co-hosts with commentator Zane “Epengu” Bhansali. And on Tuesday, he released a 90+ minute analysis of the set, getting into the nitty-gritty to explain his—and Zain’s—decision-making. Check it out below:

This analysis is a must-watch for anyone interested in competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee. Competitor interested in improving their game, particularly Marth mains, would learn much from watching it, and commentators hoping to understand the mindsets of top players would benefit as well. And regardless, it’s just entertaining. If you’ve got an hour and 36 minutes to spare, don’t hesitate to take a look!

Potential Plot Details of BIRDS OF PREY May Have Leaked

Birds of Prey has most of its cast set and it’s only a matter of time before we learn more about the actual plot. In fact, we may have learned a healthy amount of the plot. Revenge of the Fans is reporting that they have some new plot details for the Cathy Yan directed film. You can read those details below:

“For starters, I hear that we initially find each of the leads dealing with their own individual issues before eventually teaming up. What are they up to, you ask?

Black Canary (Smolett-Bell) is a singer who fights crime at night.

Huntress (Winstead) was a killer for Black Mask right up until discovering that he killed her family. So now she’s hunting him down.

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is trying to move on from The Joker (who is referenced, but not seen).

Renee Montoya, on the other hand, is on Huntress and Black Mask’s trail because of the body count they’ve amassed.

What ultimately brings them together, as was referenced in the synopsis released online in August, is Cassandra Cain. See, Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, has kidnapped the young Ms. Cain because he sees her as “The Perfect Assassin,” and he’s grooming her to take the spot once held by Huntress. I’m told Cain will be handled similarly to the way X-23 was depicted in James Mangold’s Logan– except without any abilities, since that’s not Cain’s thing. She’s just really good at killing people thanks to a tragic upbringing where her father turned her into a weapon. Similar to X-23, her dialogue will be extremely limited as she’s presented as a tormented, yet silently deadly killer.”

RotF also reports a “EPIC CAMEO” but doesn’t know who it will be. Do you think that these details are possible, or just part of a fan-made theory?

Birds of Prey is currently slated for release on February 7, 2020.

Frightening Trailer For The James Wan-Produced Horror Film THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA

New Line Cinema has released a trailer and poster for their upcoming James Wan-produced horror film The Curse of La Llorona. As you will see, this film has a very creepy vibe that is probably going to scare the crap out of a lot of people.

The movie is based on the real-life Latinx folklore of the ghost of a weeping woman who terrorizes as she attempts to take children and scares the shit out of anyone who gets in her way. The trailer prominently features a scene where two kids are being terrorized by the ghost while in a car. We don’t normally see hauntings in cars, so I thought that was pretty cool.

The film stars Linda Cardellini (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Patricia Velasquez (The Mummy), Sean Patrick Thomas (Barbershop: Back in Business) and Raymond Cruz (Better Call Saul). The story is set in 1970s Los Angeles and Cardellini plays a widowed social worker raising her two kids. As she investigates a case, she starts to find similarities between it and a supernatural entity that is her own family.

This is the full synopsis for the film:

La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.

In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.

Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying.

In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children.

Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.

Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom. Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul. And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.

This is a crazy eerie first trailer! I loved what I saw and I can’t wait to see the movie! This actually looks like it’s going to be a proper terrifying horror movie!

The film was directed by Michael Chaves (Chase Champion) and was written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis

The Curse of La Llorona is set to hit theaters April 19, 2019.
