A few months ago, we learned that Gambit is slated for a February 14, 2019 release, and according to Omega Underground, filming will begin March 19, 2018 in New Orleans at Big Easy Studios. This is the same studio where Logan and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes were shot.
Gambit is my favorite character from X-Men. He’s funny, got awesome powers and skills, and seems like he knows when to be serious. This is especially perfect for me since Rogue is my wife’s favorite character. Unfortunately, Gambit hasn’t had the best portrayal on the silver screen. That’s right, I used the singular version because for whatever reason he has only been in one of the X-Men movies, and it’s one of the most hated ones: X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Imagine my excitement though when I heard Gambit would get his own movie. I was ecstatic! Then I found out that he was going to be played by Channing Tatum and that brought down my enthusiasm a little. My main concern is honestly the accent. I’ve never heard Tatum pull off a Cajun accent and that’s one of the keys to being Gambit. Then you add a couple of directors leaving the project and you start to lose faith. However, I still want to see this movie! It's being directed by Gore Verbinski (The Ring, A Cure For Wellness) and I hope that it is good. It has definitely has potential. This is the rumored plot that was previously released:
Remy Lebeau (Channing Tatum) is on trial in New-Orleans. He’s considered a huge security risk. We flashback to almost 25 years before. Master thief Luke Lebeau runs into eight-year-old Gambit while doing a heist. Impressed by his skills, he offers to take the mutant orphan under his wings. Raised alongside other strays he calls “cousins”, the teenage Gambit becomes the superstar of the Thief Guild. He encounters Bella Donna Boudreaux while on the run from the police. Sparks immediately fly since Bella is also a fellow mutant. Their love is directly prohibited by both families since the Boudreaux are sworn enemies of the Lebeau clan. Deciding to unite the two sides, Remy offers to have the two clans team up on a HUGE heist to profit both families. Of course, the whole plan goes awry, and in the chaos, Maryanne Boudreaux shoots and kill Luke Lebeau.
We jump to 10 years later; Gambit is hired to do a job in Paris to steal something from the Louvre Museum. It was apparently a test job to see if he still has it. His mysterious employer is revealed to be Nathaniel Essex a.k.a. Mr. Sinister. He offers Gambit 40 million to recover a mysterious trunk that was stolen by the Boudreaux clan. It will be auctioned off during the yearly Thieves Ball where all the criminal organizations in the world meet up. It uses New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations as a cover. Gambit decides to enlist a crew of mutants to pull off this seemingly impossible heist…
Who's your favorite member of the X-Men? Are you excited for this movie?
It’s no secret that the DC Expanded Universe is not doing so hot. Outside of Wonder Woman, a lot of their films have not done very well critically. This, of course, has led to a restructuring of people at Warner Bros. that put producer Walter Hamadain charge of the DC film division. A shake-up like this can put into question the future of films that have been announced such as Green Lantern Corps. For all the fans of Green Lantern, don’t worry. Screenwriter David Goyer (Batman Begins) has told IGN that the movie is "still in the works." When pressed for a bit more info, Goyer responded with:
Seems fair enough since the changes are still new. I hope that this movie goes through and I hope it’s better than the last one we got. Green Lantern is in my top 5 of DC heroes and there’s a lot they can work with. How do you think they should handle the Green Lantern Corps movie?
The DC Extended Universe is no stranger to cameos. Batman and Flash both appeared in Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman was in Batman VS Superman. I would be a little shocked if there weren’t cameos in Aquaman and Shazam! at this point. And now Zachary Levi has said who he would want the cameo in Shazam! to be and that is Wonder Woman. In an interview with ET, Levi said:
I think that could lead to some great humorous moments if handled correctly. I would love to see Wonder Woman show up. So far she’s my favorite in the DCEU.
In addition, to talking about a cameo in the movie, Levi doubled-down on his comparison of Shazam! to the Tom Hanks classic, Big by saying:
The more I hear about this movie, the more excited I become. I hope it’s able to do well amid all the changes at Warner Brothers and with the less than stellar reception of their other films in the DC Universe. Who would you want to see as a cameo in Shazam!?
We don’t hear about too many films made outside of the West, but maybe we should change that. Bilal: A New Breed of Hero debuted all the way back in 2015 at the Dubai Film Festival and was then screened in 2016 at the Annecy Film Festival. Until now though, we haven’t been able to see it in the United States. That will change this February as Bilal will be in select theaters starting February 2, 2018. This animated film comes from Barajoun Entertainment and it looks really good.
Bilal was directed by Khurram H. Alavi and Ayman Jamal and will feature the talents of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ian McShane and China Anne McClain. I’m hoping that it comes to a theater near me, are you?
Magneto is one of the most well-known mutants from X-Men. He’s also very powerful. He was even recruited by Apocalypse to be one of the four horsemen. How powerful is he though? He can levitate, turn satellites, and even pull the iron from a security guards blood and butt. That’s right! In case you forgot, Mystique helps Magneto escape his glass and plastic prison in X2: X-Men United by injecting a security guard’s butt with iron. Magneto then senses the extra iron and uses his magnetic powers to pull out the iron from the guard’s body and form three balls to destroy the prison. How much magnetic force would Magneto need to apply in order to pull off this feat? That’s the question Kyle Hill discusses in the latest episode of Because Science with Kyle Hill. I love Hill’s show because he walks you through the science and breaks it down so that I can understand. I’ll leave the science to Hill, but I will let you know that the magnetic force is vastly larger than the movie lets on. What fandom questions do you want answered by science?
Back in 2015, we were all surprised by how much we loved Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man. I was not expecting to like that movie as much as I did. It was Ant-Man, how could anyone get excited about that? For me, it was kind of like how could anyone get excited about Aquaman in the DC Universe? I was proven wrong. I loved Rudd’s portrayal of Ant-Man and was excited to see him return for Captain America: Civil War. In Ant-Man we saw Scott learn about Hank Pym’s shrinking technology and we saw some great miniature fights. Then, in Civil War, we got to enjoy that technology again as Scott pretended to be Tony Stark’s conscious. However, towards the end of the big airport fight, we got to see Giant-Man. Scott could use technology to increase his size and it was quite a shock for some of us. I would’ve just assumed they’d save that for the sequel to Ant-Man, but they didn’t and it was spectacular. Well, Andy Park, an artist at Marvel Studios, recently released the first keyframe art made for Giant-Man and it’s glorious.
It’s a new year. 2018 already has so many great things ahead of us including great movies such as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Solo: A Star Wars Story coming to theaters. You also have your resolutions for the new year to help you improve as a person. Well, why not complete those resolutions in Star Wars style? No, I’m not referring to blowing up a battle station that looks like a moon or planet, I mean actual fashion. Angel Jackets has a Star Wars collection with amazing looking jackets, shirts, sweaters, gloves, and more. Do you want Han Solo’s jacket? What about Finn’s? One of my favorites is this hoodie that lets you show your support for porgs.
If you’re not into jackets and hoodies, don’t overlook the earrings that are available. There’s a wide variety of options available for both men and women. What are you going to wear this year?
When you hear Darth Vader’s theme, “The Imperial March,” what are your thoughts? Impending doom? Oh crap? Is someone about to be choked? Those are all very reasonable thoughts. It is a powerful song that immediately tells you, “crap is about to happen and someone is going to die.” However, what if it was written in a major key instead of a minor key? You no longer have to think about it. Muted Vocal has transposed the song into a major key for you to listen to. It sounds triumphant and the theme of a hero, not the most menacing villain in the series. It almost works as a redemption song for Darth Vader as Muted Vocal named it. If it’s too happy for you, check out their transposition of the “Star Wars Theme” into a minor key. What’s your favorite song transposition?
We have all heard the saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” What the saying doesn’t explain is that the man is fed for a lifetime because he’s able to turn those fish into knives and start a fishy knife business. Dried bonito, or katsuobushi, is considered the hardest food in the world and apparently has many useful applications as food, a hammer, and a knife. To get to this hardened state requires weeks of drying the fish out and fermentation. However, once it does you’ll have a great multi-purpose tool. The YouTube channel kiwami japan even shows you the process of how to turn this dried fish into a knife that cuts. That's right, this knife can cut paper and puncture aluminum cans. The video may only be about 10 minutes, but you can tell that it takes a lot of time and effort to get that blade. What’s your favorite multi-purpose tool?
Do you remember playing with your friends and pretending to be characters from your favorite shows and movies? I remember when Super Smash Bros Melee was on its way out and the rumors were flying about what new characters would join as playable characters like Sonic, Mega Man, the Polygon Team, and more, my friends and I would pretend to be these characters during recess and “fight.” Battle of the Geeks is a fantastic video from Iconoclast Brazil in the same vein as that. Two geeks fight using weapons and powers from some of the most popular geek culture franchises.
I know I can’t name them all, but here’s a start of the list: Star Wars, Star Trek, Street Fighter, Spider-Man, Dragon Ball, Game of Thrones, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, The Matrix, Stranger Things, kung fu movies, Naruto, Back to the Future, Ant-Man, and Magic the Gathering. This is a fantastic video for any geek. The special effects are fantastic and it just reminds me of my childhood. What other franchises did you spot?
