Maisie Williams is an adored actress who is probably best known for her role as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. She is very talented and one of the reasons my wife and I are excited to see The New Mutants as well. To add to her talented acting, it appears she’s a pretty good cosplayer. When Williams wasn’t at the Golden Globes, she posted a photo of herself to Instagram dressed up as Coraline Jones from Neil Gaiman’s book and movie Coraline. Coraline is pretty creepy so I don't know that I would recommend young children watching it, but it is a good movie with solid characters and Williams’ costume is spot on. The yellow jacket, the blue hair, everything is perfect. She even has her best friend Wyborn “Wybie” Lovat in Oliver Jackson who also has a fantastic costume. Thankfully, they do not appear to have button eyes so I think everyone’s safe. What’s your favorite cosplay a celebrity has done?
Going from a minor key to a major key can cause a song to feel the exact opposite of how it was written. Just listen to "The Imperial March" in a major key as an example. It no longer sounds ominous and of impending doom. Well, Sleep Good is a psychedelic pop band who has decided to mess with a classic grunge song. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the most famous song by Nirvana, and probably the most famous song from the grunge era. Kurt Cobain’s voice and simple guitar part are a perfect pair. When you listen to the song, it’s very angry and angsty. When you listen to Sleep Good’s version “Teen Sprite,” that all goes away and it sounds like a pop hit that could be a cousin to Hanson’s “MMMBop.” It’s scary what you can do when transposing music. Although with lyrics, this transposition creates a new level of irony as the counter-culture song is sung to a happy instrumental track instead of the dark angsty tone of the original. I still prefer the original, but it’s fun to see what the Internet will do. Which version is your favorite?
I love geeks on the Internet. You guys can be some of the most creative people I’ve seen. There have been so many awesome fan-made mash-up trailers for Avengers: Infinity War that you’d think it gets old after the first one or two. It doesn’t. We’ve seen an animated trailer, a retro trailer, and an anime trailer featuring dozens of anime. Now we have an anime trailer that is exclusively Dragon Ball characters. The trailer was made by Dizzle Shizzle and most, if not all, of the footage, appears to be from Dragon Ball Super and this trailer is just as amazing as the others. Goku Black seems to be our Thanos, Vegeta is Thor, and Beerus is Black Panther. I love these trailers, so please keep them coming. What’s your favorite fan-made trailer mash-up?
The guys over at the Waterjet Channel on YouTube recently found an enhydro agate that was roughly 2 million years old and it had some water trapped inside. So, what do they do with it? They decide to break it open and have one of their members, Mitchell, taste the 2-million-year-old water. One of the dangers here is that there's no guarantee the water from the agate is safe to drink. In fact, the guys over at Boing Boing point out, "...enhydro agates rarely contain pure water. They often also contain quartz microcrystals, debris, or petroleum, depending on the conditions under which they were formed." The team also gathers culture swabs of Mitchell’s tongue, the rock water, and a gas pump that Mitchell had licked in a previous episode to compare after a week. You can see the results in the video below, but I have to say, that is a beautiful rock. What’s the oldest thing you’ve ever licked?
I know many girls who have dressed up as Disney Princesses. I have never seen this take on them though. Instagram model Hamel Patel has combined her love for Disney Princess with her family’s heritage. On her Instagram she stated:
I think these are phenomenal. I know at first glance I couldn’t see who a couple of them were, but when I took more than 2 seconds to look, everything became clear. These are masterpieces and I wish more people would do similar things. I would love to see more Disney Princess inspired photos that mix in some more traditional outfits from all over the world. That would be something incredible. Which of Patel’s outfits is your favorite?
Gotham by Gaslight began the Batman Elseworld storylines and was published back in February 1989. Essentially, the idea is that Bruce Wayne becomes Batman in 1889 and faces down against Jack the Ripper. If you missed the announcement, this storyline is being adapted into an animated film and it looks pretty good. Warner Bros. released a new clip that introduces some familiar faces to us earlier this week. If you want to know more about the story, here’s a synopsis:
If you want to read the story before watching the movie, you can pick up a copy of Gotham by Gaslight over on Amazon. It’s only 48 pages, so it shouldn’t take too long to get through. Because it’s only 48 pages, DC has stated that the movie will expand on the story to get the runtime to around 80 minutes. If handled well, the additions could prove great. If done poorly, it could kill the film (I’m looking at you The Killing Joke). Are you excited to see this great story come to life?
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight will be released digitally on January 23 or on Blu-ray and DVD February 6. Pre-orders are available now.
It looks like the game of musical chairs is still going over at Warner Bros. It has been reported that Toby Emmerich has been promoted to chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures. This gives him direct access to the CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Kevin Tsujihara. So, what? Big deal. How does this change anything? Well, Warner Bros.' goal with promoting Emmerich and giving him direct access to Tsujihara is to streamline the decision-making process. Before this move, there was a committee approach to making decisions about the movies. Now it appears Emmerich will be able to give the greenlight to movies, and if it’s a problem, Tsujihara will be able to stop it.
That’s not the only change though. Sue Kroll was the marketing chief, but she has been moved over to be a producer. I’m hopeful that this more streamlined approach will help improve things over at the studios. Maybe we’ll be able to get that Martian Manhunter movie now that only one person needs to say yes. Do you think these changes are going to be good for the DC films, bad, or not make a difference?
It is no secret that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is full of heated debates and questions. It’s also no secret that the movie does have a few plot holes (most movies do). Rian Johnson is more than happy to help answer some of the questions and do his best to close some plot holes in interviews. In true Johnson fashion he has talked to IGN to explain a part at the end of the movie that has raised questions from many fans. This should go without saying, but SPOILERS ahead.
At the end of the movie, we have a showdown between Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker. This is the showdown we were all waiting for since Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The question many fans have though revolves around Luke’s weapon of choice: Anakin’s blue lightsaber. Many fans have asked why Luke didn’t use his green lightsaber. Why did he use his father’s? I knew part of the reason was to be a clue to us, the audience, that this was not really Luke. However, here’s Johnson’s explanation:
But what about the lightsaber splitting in two? There's no way Kylo wouldn't have noticed that, right?
That makes sense. I hadn’t even considered that due to the flash of light Kylo wouldn’t have been able to see the destroyed saber, especially since Rey is already gone by the time he wakes up. It also makes sense because Luke knows about Kylo’s obsession with everything Darth Vader. By seeing his old mentor whom he had deemed a failure using Vader’s old lightsaber, Kylo’s anger levels would skyrocket. Thank you, Johnson, for helping me understand this a bit better. Does this help solve your quandaries about the final showdown for Luke Skywalker?
Last month, Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theaters and ever since people have been arguing about everything in that movie. Also, now that it’s out, people have started speculating about Episode IX. Well, let’s go back and revisit the start of the new trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. CBM. has reported that Mark Hamill has shared an alternate ending for The Force Awakens that changed to what we saw due to the vision Rian Johnson had for The Last Jedi:
If you haven’t seen The Last Jedi yet, you may wonder why they had to change it, so go watch it already! For those who have seen it, you understand fully the reasoning behind why the scene had to be changed.
If you don’t know what RWBY is, I recommend you check it out. It’s a web anime series made by Rooster Teeth (the guys that make Red vs Blue) that follows a team of young girls, Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, as they train to become huntresses and defend the world from Grimm. The show is fantastic and I highly recommend it. You can find it on YouTube as well as Rooster Teeth's site. That being said, the RWBY manga that was published in Viz Media’s Shonen Jump, will now make its way to stores starting January 16, 2018. According to Anime Mojo, Senior Editor at Rooster Teeth Joel Enos describes the manga as follows:
I’m really excited for the release. You can even pre-order it from Amazon or your preferred retailer where books are sold. Are you excited to delve into these backstories?
