Netflix Renews Jason Bateman’s OZARK for a Third Season

Netflix has renewed the crime thriller series Ozark for Season 3. I’m a fan of the show and have enjoyed watching the dark story that it tells unfold. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should give it a shot. It sucked me in pretty quick.

The series revolves around financial planner Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his wife, Wendy (Laura Linney), and their family's sudden relocation from the suburbs of Chicago to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks. While there they end up getting sucked deep into the dangerous drug cartel and they are trying to survive that while at the same time trying to keep their family from falling apart.

The third season will consist of 10 episodes and Jason Batemen is worried about the character he plays. He shared the following on Twitter following the announcement:

Are you happy to hear that Ozark is coming back for a third season? After how Season 2 ended, I can’t wait to see where the story is going to take these characters next. I imagine things aren’t going to turn out good for them in the end.

Lady Gaga Might Be Disney’s Ursula In Live Action Version Of THE LITTLE MERMAID

gaga.jpg

Lady Gaga’s acting resume has bulked up a fair bit in recent years, and apparently the big pop singer has caught the eye of Disney. Disinsider reports the house of mouse is looking to pick Gaga up as Ursula, the sea witch who steals Ariel’s voice.

As of now its just a rumor according to Disney, although it wouldn’t be surprising given Gaga’s performance in A Star Is Born. I’m not completely confident the casting is right honestly, considering Ursula is known for having a bad voice which is why she wants to steal Ariel’s. To me, it just seems like a wasted casting unless they’re going to have Gaga sing Ariel’s parts?

What are your thoughts on this potential casting, and does it seem like a fit to you?

Netflix’s THE WITCHER Series Casts Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer

Netflix has cast a bunch of new actors in their highly anticipated series adaptation of The Witcher including the two lead female roles! Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Into The Badlands) is set to take on the role of Ciri and Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) will play the character Yennefer. They both join the previously cast Henry Cavill, who is playing Geralt.

Ciri is the young princess of Cintra, one of the kingdoms at the center of the plot. Yennefer, meanwhile, is a sorceress and Geralt of Rivia's (Cavill) main love interest. She is also a mother figure to Ciri.

The series is based on the epic fantasy novel series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The books also inspired the incredible video game franchise by Warsaw-based game studio CD Projekt Red.

The series also stars Jodhi May (Game of Thrones, Genius) as Queen Calanthe; Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as her husband, the knight Eist; Adam Levy (Knightfall, Snatch) as the druid Mousesack; MyAnna Buring as the head of the magical academy at Aretuza, Tissaia; Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers; and Millie Brady as the outcast Princess Renfri.

I think that cast should make fans happy. Producer and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Daredevil and The Defenders) recently talked to THR about the casting of the series and says that they ended up “seeing over 200 young women from all over Europe and really saw a great group of girls, but then when we met Freya, she read for another role. I actually went to London to meet with her in person and we knew it right away.” When talking about the casting rumors involving Ciri that caused a backlash last month, she said:

“It boils down to a couple things. One, this property has such a passionate fanbase. I think any leak at all was going to attract this type of attention, and with any attention comes backlash to that attention. I do think that whatever information is trickling out there, there will be people responding positively to it and people responding negatively to it. I think that’s just part of making a television show, and especially a show this big. In terms of why people responded so strongly, I think the fans really have pictures of these characters in their minds and I don’t blame them for that. I get it. When I read my favorite books I certainly imagine characters a certain way. There’s obviously a couple lines of description of Ciri in the books and people become very enamored with their own vision of it. I think coming in as a writer and saying my vision might look different than yours is scary for fans, but truthfully I don’t think it has to be. One of the things I feel most strongly about is people being afraid that we’re going to strip out the cultural context of The Witcher, to remove its Slavic roots, the very thing people in Poland are proud of. That couldn’t be further from the truth. What I’ve always wanted to do is take these Slavic stories and give them a global audience.”

When talking about what attracted Hissrich to the project, she said:

“What attracted me was how I felt about the books. I fell in love with them, the characters and the stories. The fervor around it took me by surprise at first, frankly. I had been on Twitter since 2013, but when I first stuck my neck out I was surprised with the response. It’s something I feel really strongly about right now. I’m in this position to peel back the curtain a tiny bit to show people the process of making television. I wanted people to understand that I’m not trying to make this property my own or put my stamp on it, or make an American or female vision of it, or any specific vision of it. I just wanted people to know that I really respected the material. Truthfully, the controversy about Ciri, my own politics or the fact that I’m a woman, to me, just interacting with the fans has helped an enormous amount, because they see I’m on their side.”

When asked if the show will feature Ciri and Yennefer in prominent roles alongside Geralt, Hissrich said:

“Yeah, what’s interesting is the first couple books are told from Geralt’s perspective and when I was reading them I saw that there are all these other characters who are very strong and powerful; not just the women, by the way. They can be pulled to the forefront so it doesn’t always feel like just Geralt’s journey, because the journey of one man is never going to be very interesting. It’s only going to be as interesting as the people he interacts with. That’s why these characters are rising in prominence in the series.”

Hissrich is then asked if she intentionally cast lesser-known actors to star opposite Cavill and she explained that they were just looking for the best actors for the roles:

“Not specifically, nor were we looking for a movie star when we cast Henry. We’re looking for the best actors for these roles. Period. End of story. It comes down to the best actor for the role. Henry’s obviously a big fan of the franchise. We met in early April and had a very general meeting. I then went off and met with hundreds of other candidates for Geralt and never really got Henry out of my mind. In casting Anya and Freya, the cool thing was we were open to anyone and both of them, to me, embody the spirits of the characters.”

She concludes by discussing whether or not she was more inspired by the book series or the video game series:

“It does muddy the water a little bit for me. I’m a huge fan of the games. That being said, what I really tried to steer away from is that the video games right now are the sole visual representation of these stories and we needed to create our own visual representation. As I’ve been developing the series I’ve actually pulled back from playing the video games because I wanted to make sure the show we were creating was its own unique thing.”

I’m super stoked for this series and I can’t wait to see what it ends up looking like! The series is still in pre-production so we’ve got awhile before we see anything.

Dave Bautista Wants in on James Gunn’s SUICIDE SQUAD 2 But Who Could He Play?

Yesterday it was reported that James Gunn will be writing and possibly directing Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros. A lot of fans are excited to see how he ends up handling these characters. He did such a great job bring the misfit characters from Guardians of the Galaxy to life, and I’m hoping that he can bring that same magic to DC’s Suicide Squad.

There’s one Guardians of the Galaxy actor ready to jump on board Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2 and that actor is Dave Buatista. Not long after the news hit, he tweeted out the following:

Dave Bautista has been a big supporter of Gunn since he was fired by Disney from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 so it’s not surprising that he would want to work with him again on Suicide Squad 2. The question is, who could Dave Bautista play in the film?

Personally, I’d love to see Gunn bring King Shark into the story! That’s also a perfect character for Bautista to take on! King Shark is a humanoid shark that has super strength, berserker strength, superhuman durability, and enhanced senses.

King Shark is also as intelligent as a human. He can talk normally and also read. He also has a very keen sense of humor and one of his greatest fears is being vegetarian. That sounds like a role Bautista could have fun playing!

Are there any other DC characters that you think the actor could play in the film?

The Screenwriter of The KRAVEN THE HUNTER Movie Says Kraven will Face Off with Spider-Man

I don’t know if Kraven The Hunter screenwriter Richard Wenk got the memo about Spider-Man and the deal between Marvel and Sony, but it seems like he plans on including Spider-Man in the story he’s writing for the Kraven movie.

It’s been made very clear several times that Spider-Man is not a part of the Marvel universe that Sony Pictures is building with the Spider-Man villains. But in a recent interview with Discussing Film, Wenk claims that Sergei Kravinoff a.k.a. Kraven the Hunter, will “come face-to-face with Spider-Man.”

“I’m just starting it. It’s an interesting world. A great character. It’s going to adhere very closely to the lore of Kraven the Hunter. And he is going to come face to face with Spider-Man. I’m just beginning it, beginning the process, and because it’s a big IP, Marvel world, there’s lots of hurdles to overcome before you can start writing, to crack the right story and to get the right tone. It’s a new world for me. But what’s nice about it is it’s a very grounded character, he doesn’t have a lot of crazy superpowers and things like that so he’s more grounded and that fits what I like to do. That’s as much as I know.”

The writer also confirmed that the film would be influenced by the classic storyline “Kraven’s Last Hunt”. Hey, if Spider-Man and Kraven are going to be in this movie together… awesome! That would be amazing! I would love nothing more than to see these two characters face off on the big screen! In my mind, a Kraven story without Spider-Man just wouldn’t work.

What if this Kraven the Hunter film actually ends up being the third standalone Spider-Man movie? That would be a cool surprise! Or maybe Kraven the Hunter will be the first movie to bring Spider-Man back to Sony. We’ll just have to wait and see. Either way, I hope that we do get to see Kraven and Spider-Man battle each other in this movie!

Kraven's Last Hunt was written by J. M. DeMatteis, first published in 1897, and is one of the best Spider-Man stories that has been created. It tells the story of Spider-Man's final battle with Kraven The Hunter. It's obviously a must-read for any Spider-Man fan.

Kraven the Hunter has stalked and killed every animal known to man. But there is one beast that has eluded him. One quarry that has mocked him at every turn: the wall-crawling web-slinger known as Spider-Man. And to prove that he is the hero's master, he will pull on his costume and become him... after he shoots and buries him six feet under!

What do you think about this? It this wishful thinking for the writer or do you think the plan is to really have Spider-Man and Kraven come face to face in the movie?

Avi Arad Talks MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE and Don’t Expect The Movie To Be Rated R

With Venom being a box office success, Sony Pictures thinks they made a great movie and now they are going to move forward with their plans of building out their own Spider-Man-less Marvel cinematic universe. The next film on the pipeline is Morbius The Living Vampire which will star Jared Leto.

In a recent interview with Collider, Sony producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach revealed details on the next villain they plan to bring to the big screen and if you were hoping for an R-rating, it doesn’t sound like that’s the direction they are going.

When talking about getting Leto on board to star in the film, Arad said:

“Oh yeah. This is the great thing for us now, that an actor like him, and an actor like Tom [Hardy] wanted to have their own character. But the character they love. Both of them, very hard to get them to do a movie. You actually cannot get them. We went in, we sat with them, and everybody told us, “Oh, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.” Nothing. That’s what he wanted to do.”

Arad went on to explain how he wants to take his grandkids to see these movies, so it seems like an R-rating isn’t likely:

“Again, what I said to you before, it depends on the story. If the success of the story depends on being R-rated…

But at least for me, I have grandkids, kids, whatever, all these things, and some of these movies, they’re dying to see. You know? As I took my grandson, seven, to the recording session of Venom. And he had the time of his life.”

Tolmach agreed and went on to say:

“I don’t think there’s a rule written somewhere in stone that all of them have to be one thing, alright? I think what Avi’s saying is right. I think we’ve all talked about, ‘Well, if one of these presents itself in a way…’ Look, we have all seen, as you’ve said, the R-rated versions of these movies now working. So, that’s out there. You can succeed to a staggering degree.”

Then Arad used Venom as an example of a character that wasn’t compromised by a PG-13 rating:

“We didn’t compromise anywhere. You saw the movies. There is no compromise. That was Venom … You know what? When you hear Venom… forget Venom. When you hear, Carnage, the only thing you can think of is R. But, if you know his story, if you really know the comic, there’s no R here. He’s a tortured soul. It’s not about what he does, because we never have to show the knife going from here to there, and the blood is pouring. What you have to show is, what is the motivation? Was he born like that, or it’s someone we should feel for, because if you are succeeding to make a villain someone you can feel for, jackpot.”

I get what he’s saying, but I have to say that the Venom film that was released didn’t feel like Venom to me. I know a lot of people that liked the movie, which is great. I just didn’t care for how the character was portrayed. The character just doesn’t work without Spider-Man.

Anyway, Morbius The Living Vampire is said to be aiming for a February 2019 start date and I’m expecting it to be PG-13. I think Morbius is definitely an R-rated character, though! I mean… just look at that comic art above!

Morbius a.k.a. Dr. Michael Morbius, is "a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength — and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right and even headlined his own comic book titles."

The movie has been described as a horror action story that will follow Morbius who is disgusted by his own bloodlust, so he chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life." So, it will be like a vampire version of Dexter.

The movie will be directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life, Safe House) from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Netflix’s Lost in Space).

Are you excited for the Morbius movie? Will Sony turn Morbius into the Twilight of the Marvel universe?

Kurt Russell is Santa Clause in First Trailer For Netflix’s THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES

Kurt Russell’s latest cinematic journey puts him in the role of Santa Clause and he embarks on an adventure to save Christmas in this first trailer for The Christmas Chronicles. I’m a big fan of Russell and it’s fun to see him take on the role of Santa in this upcoming Netflix film.

The holiday adventure film comes from producer Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter) and director Clay Kaytis (The Angry Birds Movie).

The film tells the story of “sister and brother, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Russell) on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa - as you've never seen him before - and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it's too late.”

The Christmas Chronicles will be released on Netflix on November 22nd. Watch the trailer and let us know if it looks like a movie you might enjoy.

McFarlane Toys is Reviving Its Movie Maniacs and Tortured Souls Action Figure Lines!

mcfarlane-toys-is-reviving-its-movie-maniacs-and-tortured-souls-action-figure-lines3

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite action figure lines from McFarlane Toys was its Movie Maniacs. This line was big in the 90s. McFarlane Toys went out and licensed some of the most iconic characters from horror and sci-fi and then created some of the most badass collectible figures for characters such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Evil Dead, Chucky, Leatherface, and more.

We’ve now learned that McFarlane toys is bringing back that line as well as the Tortured Souls line which was also pretty cool. In an interview with IGN, Todd McFarlane said:

“So we’re gonna go back to our origins and we’re gonna go, hey, for all you people who like Tortured Souls? There’s gonna be more. For all you people who like some of the Movie Maniacs? There’s gonna be more. But even the new — the stuff we just created, like Dragons? More. Spawn? More. Twisted Tales? More.”

For those of you not familiar with Tortured Souls, those figures focused on the horrific creations of iconic horror master Clive Barker. This series focused more on original creations that looked like they were ripped from the Hellraiser films.

It was also revealed that McFarlane Toys will begin selling direct to consumer because all of the stores that they’ve been selling them in have been going out of business over the years.

I can’t wait to see what characters the next line of Movie Maniacs action figures consists of!
