Blumhouse Production has been talking about developing a new Halloween for a little over a year. John Carpenter is producing the film and David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are currently writing the script. CEO Jason Blum is so confident that the movie will be released next year, that he's will to bet his life, head, and hand on it. When asked about the film in an interview with The Wrap at the "Horrors of Blumhouse" attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, he said:
"You can kill me. You can behead me. You can chop my hand off, the prince of horror, you can cut my hand off. That’s on the record."
The whole "Prince of Horror" thing is a title jokingly bestowed on him by The Wrap. The new Halloween movie has already been given the release date of October 19th, 2018. Gordon Green will also direct it and it's looking like John Carpenter will also score the film, which would be cool!
According to McBride, the goal is to help make the "tenth sequel the scariest of them all." He previously talked about the direction they are taking the film and explained that Michael Meyers won't be immortal. He said:
“Look at where the Halloween franchise has gone. There’s a lot of room for improvement. David and I are coming from it as, we are horror fans, and we are humongous fans of John Carpenter and of what he did with the original Halloween, so I think from watching this and being disappointed by other versions of this series, I think we’re just trying to strip it down and just take it back to what was so good about the original. It was just very simple and just achieved that level of horror that wasn’t corny and it wasn’t turning Michael Myers into some supernatural being that couldn’t be killed. That stuff to me isn’t scary. I want to be scared by something that I really think could happen. I think it’s much more horrifying to be scared by someone standing in the shadows while you’re taking the trash out as opposed to someone who can’t be killed pursuing you.”
I'm certainly curious to see how this next Halloween movie is going to turn out. I really hope that they can actually make a great new film in the franchise that will scare audiences. We'll find out next year for sure because if we don't... Jason Blum is a dead man.
