In case you've been wondering how director Simon Kinberg would be handling The Dark Phoenix Saga in the upcoming film X-Men: Dark Phoenix, he offers a few bits of new details on how he will approach the story.
The Dark Phoenix Saga is one of the most popular and best X-Men comic book story arcs. It centers on Jean Grey, who becomes possessed by a fiery cosmic bird that makes her one of the most powerful beings in the universe. This is an intense change for her, and she struggles to control that power, and that leads her down the path of evil, eventually becoming the Dark Phoenix.
The comic story has an intergalactic element to it as Grey is led down a path that destroys an ancient alien civilization. This leads to a war on the moon against another alien race known as the Shi'ar.
Well, it turns out that all of the intergalactic stuff is going to be cut back. In an upcoming issue of Total Film (via X-Men Films) Director Simon Kinberg, talks about grounding some of the more fantastical elements from the comics, saying:
“[We must] find a way to ground it so it’s not too intergalactic."
He also talked about how the X-Men movies are known for telling more “human…” and emotional kind of stories. That doesn't mean he's cutting out all of the intergalactic stuff. He is just looking to ground the story and most likley focus on the characters.
I guess that means a lot of the story, if not all of it, will be set on earth. I imagine that they could also change the story behind Phoenix's origin story and it could just focus on Jean Grey's mutant power growing out of control without the help of a cosmic "force" that inhabits her.
It's been confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Evan Peters, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee will all reprise their roles from the previous films. The movie will also star Jessica Chastain as the main villain, who is believed to be Shi’ar Empress Lilandra, but that hasn't been confirmed.
If Chastain is playing this villainous character there are going to have to be some intergalactic elements in the film. Just not too much.
I got a chance to speak with Jane Whittaker, the director of the iconic title 007: Goldeneye, and it being the 20th anniversary of Goldeneye, I had to know more of what it was like working on games during the days of Nintendo 64; let alone one of the most well known and beloved titles!
Funny enough, I found contact to Whittaker thanks to the follow ups I do in the indie game part of the industry. Whittaker is now leading a team known as Keystone Games and they are launching a title Rogue Islands, which Whittaker has shown excitement to see released!
Interview with Director Whittaker
What was it like working on a game during the N64 days? "I think it was the most creative time to be in the industry. There was just so much going on that still has resonance today. Titles such as my Alien Vs Predator and Goldeneye along with Quake and Wolfenstein and a slew of other releases really set a template for the titles that myself and other studios are still developing some 20 years later. It seems a cliché but it really was a golden age of gaming. I worked on games through the 80's but the hardware didn't really do justice to our imaginations. The Goldeneye era and machines such as the N64 and Atari Jaguar really were a quantum leap in graphical and processing power. The gaming world changed around that time with the first opportunity to actually make games that we really wanted to make. It was the start of the barriers coming down between the developer and the hardware."
Looking back now, do you think it could have been any better? "I think in retrospect every title can have some tweaks or changes. I think any developer in the business will say that about every game. Am I happy with how the game turned out? Yes, definitely. It has become a gaming icon, how could myself, Rare, MGM and everyone involved not be happy with a game that it still played and loved my millions today."
Have you guys have any thoughts about doing a 007: Goldeneye remaster? "Short answer is that, unfortunately, it’s nothing to do with me. I no longer work for Metro Goldwyn Mayer. If a new one is ever in the works, I hope I would be invited to get involved as I would sign on the dotted line without a second's hesitation!
My association with FPS is far from over; 34 years after starting my career I have been involved in the development of Rogue Islands, a new procedurally generated FPS that is taking the gaming world by storm. Will Rogue Islands follow its illustrious predecessors such as AvP and Goldeneye? Will I be celebrating the 20th anniversary of an iconic game in 20 years time from my retirement home? Only time will tell."
Did you guys know how popular the game would be? "Absolutely not. Of course we knew we had the hottest property that MGM had to offer in Goldeneye and there was a genuine desire to make the game the best it could be. That said, no-one ever knows how well a game will do. You give it all your love and passion and commitment and put a game out in the world. After that longevity and survival of a game is really down to the public reception. We were massively successful and the public were fantastic. I guess the answer why is simple: who wouldn't want to become James Bond! albeit from your living room!"
What did you do to help create Goldeneye? "I was director of development at Metro Goldwyn Mayer. That meant that I was responsible for all the interactive titles that used key company franchises, such as James Bond. So, working with Nintendo, I was representing MGM as the key stakeholder in the game, ensuring that the Bond licence was properly used and managed as befitting such an amazing franchise. I was also involved in asking Rare to develop the title, as I considered them to be the top team in the world at that time. Additionally, having just come off development of Alien Vs Predator (the second only first person shooter in history) just before we started Goldeneye, I was able to get involved in gameplay design, AI, cinematic ideas and a whole host of other things. I had literally just finished a massively successful FPS with a movie licence as the programmer and joint designer so all those skills were able to be ported into the vision for Goldeneye. I spent a significant amount of time at the filming of the actual Bond movies to really get a feel of how a Bond game should be, which was fed back to the group. I really wanted a game that was cinematic, really special and fun!"
What is your favourite part of the game? "I honestly don't have a favourite part. My favourite aspect of the game is the cinematic look and feel throughout and that you really do feel like you are James Bond. My vision for movie-licensed games has always been that they should be a cinematic interactive experience. The player needs plenty to do, but they really do need to feel that they are living in the world of the movie with grand cinematics and set pieces that suck you into the game. Goldeneye has that in spades!"
It's amazing how far we have come already in the game industry and still have tyrant's like Whittaker in there bringing new ideas, concepts, and stories through incredible worlds developed through passion! I look forward to see what else is created and feel lucky to be going along for the journey!
The first teaser trailer has been released for the crazy-looking action crime thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99. The movie comes from S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk) and it stars Vince Vaughn in what looks to be his most hardcore and badass role to date! The trailer is pretty much cut around him beating the shit out of his car with his bare hands. Judging from what I'm seeing in this trailer, I think the movie looks freakin' great! If you've seen Zahler's previous film Bone Tomahawk, then you know that this next film of his will be brutal and we get a pretty solid sense of that from this trailer.
In BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99, a former boxer named Bradley (Vince Vaughn) loses his job as an auto mechanic, and his troubled marriage is about to end. At this crossroads in his life, he feels that he has no better option than to work for an old buddy as a drug courier. This improves his situation until the terrible day that he finds himself in a gunfight between a group of police officers and his own ruthless allies. When the smoke clears, Bradley is badly hurt and thrown in prison, where his enemies force him to commit acts of violence that turn the place into a savage battleground.
The movie also stars Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) and Don Johnson. Brawl in Cell Black 99 is set to be released on October 6th. Watch the trailer and let us know if you're in or out!
Blending together two genre's of the game industry isn't always something easy to do, let alone a compatible option in most cases, but here is Akupara Games to show that almost any two genre's can be mixed! Their title The Metronomicon: Slay The Dance Floor was originally launched on Steam back in 2016 and is now bring brought to the console!
Metronomicon blends together the music game genre with the elements from an RPG! At first I couldn't imagine these two going together well, but it turns out to be one of my favorite games that I have played so far! Here's the console launch day trailer:
With a silly story, it features a team that graduated from dance academy and is off to fight the rave's that keep sprouting up. With the rave's comes new music and new monsters! While you may make some friends along the way, it will take the effort of them all to put an end to the monsters reign of terror and fight them on their own floor; the dance floor that is!
Each character will have their own move sets and specialties, just like an RPG. You have the medic, the sorceress, the beast, the brute, and a few other characters that have a range of moves that can do elemental damage, stunning, healing, or some other ability.
When you are doing a battle, you have to land a sequence of notes in order to place an attack, using one character at a time. Although the moves are adjustable, they let you pick which attack you want to do from the three options you have. Highlighting a section with blue to signify attack "a" to red being attack "b" and to yellow as attack "c," each one is different and knowing your characters will be key to your success!
The enemies do fight back and can place some hard hits! Not to mention the fact that if you don't kill one, more will just join them to increase the amount of attacks your team must endure!
During most of the songs, the goal is simply to survive till the end of the song. Obviously this is different for side quests since they have a specific goal given to you, but the hardest of the song fights lies with the boss battles. Bosses must be killed before the song ends or else the battle is considered lost, which can be more trouble than imagined thanks to when they jump out and send in some troops as substitutes for sections of the fight. I think they did a great job at how they set it up and it even makes sense!
There are some variables that come in to play during the battles as well. There is what they call "meteor attack," which is basically when you aren't hitting a full combo for the sake of doing an attack but because the arrows are all damaging if they are missed! Some heavy creatures can do this as well as the bosses. Then there are times where a giant rock will be thrown at a character and if you are mid-arrow stream then you better drop the combo and switch the character you are using or else they are going to take a heavy hit!
They are also bringing an endless mode option, but even before this there is the arena which will have challenges for you to complete in order to earn some more street cred, which you use to upgrade your menu options with even more options!
Each area has their own design, which is pretty cool, and the enemies have a good variety of creatures and costumes. All of the characters, including the monsters, dance during the battle and their attacks are in the form of a dance move, which is rather amusing. While nothing looks outstanding or eye catching, this is a good subtle mix to have with a game where you will need to focus on which move to use next and the stream of arrows that constantly rain down the track!
Of course not every song on the playlist is going to fit everyone's preference, but the variety of styles can easily bring a favorite or two choices for each player. There are also sound effects for the different elemental attacks and when you take damage, but majority of your focus will be on the songs which have a good mix and rhythm to it majority of the time.
There is always room to improve your score and skill along with more features to unlock! Then there are the side quests, the arena, and the upcoming endless mode to look forward to. Plenty of reasons to return to this game and put another playlist together!
What Could Be Better
I would of loved a versus mode with other players. While there is co-op to work with a friend, it would be cool to go head to head and prove who is the better fighting team and music player! Or even a chance to be the boss and fight your friend who is the team trying to defeat you and end your party.
The game is a lot of fun and easily addictive! From the moment I started playing it, I caught myself constantly promising "one more song," but it was never just one more song! I thoroughly enjoyed this mix of genre and would love to see the music genre have an influence or mix with an even wider variety of game styles! Truly an innovative title worth the hours of game play I can guarantee any music gamer will put in to it!
Last night's Preacher teased some surprising things, although it's hard to say exactly what will happen in these last couple of episodes in Season 2. One thing that seems certain, however, is that Cassidy is not in charge. Watch the vampire and Tulip discuss their roles within the group in the humorous clip below.
Marvel has revealed the first official photo from Luke Cage Season 2 and not only do we get to see the Power Man (Mike Colter) with Misty Knight (Simone Missick), but we also get a look at Misty's new bionic arm!
Misty lost her arm while aiding The Defenders in their battle against The Hand where it was sliced off by the villain Bakuto (Ramón Rodríguez). There are no details on the new arm, but in the comics, she got it from Stark Industries after she lost it in a bombing. It also gives her superhuman strength and other abilities such as energy blasts and gravity fields. It even has the ability to control robots.
There's no word on if any of this will transfer over when we see her back in action in Luke Cage Season 2, but it's safe to say that she'll be able to kick some ass and do some damage with it.
Warner Bros. has released an official short prequel film for Blade Runner 2049 that you're going to want to watch! The short is called Nexus: 2036 and it's set in the year 2036.
The story centers around Jared Leto's reclusive genius and scientist character, Niander Wallace. In it, he introduces a new line of replicants that he created called the Nexus 6. This is supposed to be a "perfected" replicant model and he is looking to get the prohibition on replicants repealed. This replicant can be completely controlled by humans and it seems to have no free will.
Wallace presents this new replicant to the powers at be to have the prohibition on replicants lifted, but they seemed to be horrified by the events that unfold at the meeting. This will obviously have serious ramifications that will play a major role in the plot of Blade Runner 2049. If you want to see what exactly happens, you'll have to watch the short below.
Nexus: 2036 was directed by Ridley Scott's son Luke Scott and it tells a pretty interesting brief story that sheds some new light on this Wallace character. It's also kinda cool that it's set between the first film, which took place in 2019 and the upcoming sequel. The short also stars Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange).
Director Denis Villeneuve says there are three short films being released that offer us insight into some key events that happen between 2019 and 2049. This is the first of the three, so you can expect two more in the near future.
It's time to work on your patience skills because Game of Thrones fans will have no choice but to be patient while waiting for the eighth and final season of the epic fantasy series to air.
The seventh season just ended on a pretty massive cliffhanger and now it looks like we are going to have to wait until 2019 to see the story continue! We could be waiting over 16 months before we get any more Game of Thrones episodes! I don't know what I'm going to do with myself! THR reports:
Production on the fantasy drama's eighth season is slated to begin in October and run as late as August 2018, sources say. That could push the return of the abbreviated six-episode final run into 2019 with a more than 16-month gap between seasons.
HBO programming president Casey Bloys had this to say in a statement:
"Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take. The shooting is complicated enough — on different continents, with all the technical aspects — and the special effects are a whole other production period that we're trying to figure out. That is a big factor in all of this."
I'll be honest, it's going to be hard to wait that long. But! If it means we are going to get the best final season possible, then it will be worth the wait. At least we know that the ending is coming... unless the world itself comes to an end in the next 16 months. Then we're all shit out of luck.
There will be only six episodes in the final season and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have the story locked and loaded for the final episodes. All they need to do now is make them.
This isn't the first time that HBO has given the creative teams of their series extended time between seasons to develop their shows. Remember when we were waiting two years between seasons for The Sopranos!? At least we don't have to wait that long!

As you may have already heard, last month longtime Kermit the Frog performer Steve Whitmire was fired by Disney. He has been the man behind Kermit for almost 30 years, ever since Jim Henson passed away in 1990. But, due to a series of events he was fired over “unacceptable business conduct.”
Disney has since replaced Whitmire with Matt Vogel and he recently made first public debut as the classic character. A clip has surfaced online featuring Vogel voicing Kermit and you know what? He sounds a lot like Kermit the Frog! I doubt anyone is going to complain. There are some very subtle differences, but most people probably won't notice. It seems like Disney got the perfect guy to take on the character. You can check out the clip below.

SyFy Films has released the first trailer for an intriguing looking sci-fi film called Realive. This little indie film has made the rounds at various film festivals and it looks like it could be a really well-made and solid movie. It focuses around the first man ever to be frozen and then resurrected. Here's the synopsis:
Marc (Tom Hughes) is diagnosed with a disease and is given a short time to live. Unable to accept his own end, he decides to freeze his body. Sixty years later, in the year 2084, he becomes the first cryogenically frozen man to be revived in history. Marc discovers a startling future, but the biggest surprise is that his past has accompanied him in unexpected ways.
Realive was written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Mateo Gil (Blackthorn, Nobody Knows Anybody). SyFy will release the film in select theaters on September 29th, followed by a VOD release the next week after. Watch the trailer and let us know if it looks like a film you might want to check out.
