Jordan Peele made a huge splash with his feature film directing debut with the horror film Get Out. If you've seen the movie you know how great it is. The movie is one of my favorites of the year so far, and it shows that Peele is an incredibly talented filmmaker.
Well, Warner Bros. sees that talent and, according to The Tracking Board, the studio is "moving aggressively to lock in Jordan Peele" to direct their live-action version of Akira! How freakin' cool is that!? I loved Peele's work on Get Out, and I'm really curious to see what he'd do with a film like Akira.
Warner Bros. has been on the hunt for a new director for the film, which has been in development for years. Daniel Espinosa, who recently directed that fantastic sci-fi film Life, and David Sandberd, who is the director of the fun horror movie Lights Out, were both recently rumored to be up for the gig as well. But according to the report, the discussions with Peele seem to be very encouraging.
I'd actually really like to see Peele get the job. I don't think he would take the gig if he didn't feel confident enough to give fans something incredible. When it comes to Akira, I think Peele has an understanding of what's a stake and what he's up against when it comes to the longtime fans of Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic manga/anime.
The deal isn't done yet, though, so at this point anything can happen. One thing that insiders are saying is that after Get Out, Peele feels he's "ready to make the big-budget leap now," and Akira would certainly be quite a leap for him.
What do you all think about the possibility of Peele directing Akira? Is he a director you could get behind and support?
Tencent, a new powerhouse in media in China has recently decided to turn one of their popular comics, Zombie Brother, into a live action movie.
Zombie Brother is a Chinese comic about a young boy in H city when a virus breaks out and now he is trying to escape the city with his girlfriend. I'm not quite sure where the brother part comes in, but I'm sure it will come up eventually. The comic was one of TenCent's most popular digital comics and has already become an animated series and a stage play. Tencent wants to bring it to the international market, and Channing Tatum is happy to help them produce it.
Matt Lieberman is attached to write the film, and David Sandberg is set to direct. Some may recognize Sandberg's name because he was the mastermind behind the internet film sensation Kung Fury.
With a crew like that, I can say that this actually interests me quite a bit. Tatum has been attached before to projects which haven't gone anywhere fast, cough cough, Gambit, cough, but this could be something quite interesting, and to be fair to Gambit, it still is in the works. I loved Kung Fury and think that Sandberg could make a zombie film incredibly exciting and fun.
Zombie Brother has been very successful in China, and if it lives up to the hype in American markets, it could be the start of a new franchise that has the world in a flurry.
During the Universal Pictures presentation at CinemaCon we got to see some more new footage from Tom Cruise's The Mummy. I wasn't impressed, but Drew was. You can watch us debate it in our reaction video above.
Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
The movie was directed by Alex Kurtzman and also stars Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), and Russell Crowe (Gladiator).
The Mummy will be released on June 9th, 2017, and it will be followed by modern day reboots of The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing, which are all in various stages of development.
For those of you who know Oscar Isaac, you may be familiar with his work in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Poe Dameron, a rebel pilot who fights against the very Nazi-like First Order down to the Almost Hitler Salute. Well, now it seems the actor gets to play a Mossad agent who hunts down a real Nazi in the film Operation Finale.
The film is based on the capture of notorious Nazi Adolf Eichmann by Peter Malkin, a Mossad agent, after WWII. Eichmann was one of the worst of the worst in the Nazi regime. He was responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews as one of the architects of the Holocaust. Isaac is set to play Peter Malkin who hunts down the Nazi who is in hiding in Argentina.
The film will be directed by Chris Weltz, who is known for directing and writing About a Boy and also helped in writing Rogue One. I think he is a good choice and that this film could be great. I always enjoy spy films, especially historical spy films, so this could be a dream come true for me. Also, I think Isaac is a great actor who could be great in a piece like this. The film is planned to film in Argentina around the fall and will be produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger at MGM.
We have yet to see a proper feature film adaptation of the classic Marvel villain Doctor Doom. I absolutely hated the version of the character in the most recent Fantastic Four movie. I don't know when or if Fox will ever attempt to try to bring Dr. Doom back to life again on the big screen, but while we wait to see what they do, I have a fantastic fan-made short film for you to check out today!
The unofficial short film is called"Von Doom: A Dr. Doom Origin," and it comes from writer-director-editor Ivan Kandor. This guy actually seems to have an understanding of the villain and the short film he made actually ended up being an impressively made film. As you can already tell by the title of the film, the story revolves around Doom's origin.
If any of you are fans of Dr. Doom, I think you're gonna dig this. Watch it and let us know what you think!
Blade - The Solo Cut is an amusing video that features footage that only has the character Blade in it. Every other person in the film is cut out and it's a really interesting and funny video worth checking out. It's especially funny when he's fighting people because we don't see the people he's fighting. It just looks like he's practicing and at times it looks like he's fighting himself.
This week at CinemaCon we learned that Jeremy Renner would not be reprising his role as William Brandt in Mission: Impossible 6. I wondered why that was, and according to Showbiz411, the reason is because he's too busy playing around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The site says that he will be shooting the next two Avengers films back-to-back, and after that he will also reprise his role as Hawkeye in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
We got to see Hawkeye and Ant-Man fight alongside each other in Captain America: Civil War, and they made a great team. It was especially fun to see Ant-Man taking a ride on one of Hawkeye's arrows.
Marvel has yet to confirm that Renner will return, so as of right now we should treat this all as a rumor. But it would be awesome to see Hawkeye join Ant-Man and The Wasp on their new adventure.
If you're a fan of Joss Whedon's classic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you're not going to want to miss these reunion photos from EW. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the series, the entire cast reunited, and it's so freakin' cool to see the whole gang back together again after all these years. This makes me happy.
I also included a video featuring all the actors talking about the show's legacy. It includes Joss Whedon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, and the rest of the cast. Whedon says:
“The most important thing to me is that I have had people come up to me and say the show made me feel different about what they could be, about what they could do, about how they respond to problems, about being a female leader. People getting strength from my own little terrors is… There is no better legacy than that.”
If you were hoping that Brad Pitt would end up playing Cable in Deadpool 2, I've got some bad news for you. According to director David Leitch, Pitt is no longer in the running. The news that he was being considered first broke about a week ago, and that was followed by some awesome-looking concept art that was created for the film. I was asked to remove that art from the site, so you can't see it here anymore.
I actually really liked the look of Pitt as Cable, and I love the design they've come up with are for the character. When talking about Pitt being up for the role Leitch said:
"We had a great meeting with Brad, he was incredibly interested in the property. Things didn't work out schedule-wise. He's a fan, and we love him, and I think he would've made an amazing Cable."
Kinda sucks that his scheduling didn't work out. It's cool to hear that he was interested in doing it, though. I guess that leave us with Michael Shannon. There's no official word on who will play Cable in the film yet, but we know that the announcement is coming soon. The last we heard Shannon is at the top of the studio's list, and if he's cast in the role I think he'd be great!
